Developed as Bob Weir’s signature model, the 2680 became one of the standout Japanese guitars of the late 1970s, combining some wonderfully elaborate Ibanez craftsmanship with a distinctive double-cutaway design and a spec that was anything but ordinary.

This example is also all original, which makes it particularly appealing.

The Natural finish really shows off the ash body, German carve and beautifully detailed construction, while the ebony fingerboard, ornate binding and original gold hardware give it a seriously premium feel.

It retains its original Super 80 “Flying Finger” humbuckers, one of the most recognisable Ibanez pickups of the era. The 2680 also uses the classic 24¾” scale length and set-neck construction associated with the model.

And it plays beautifully.

The frets remain in very good shape, the neck feels great and the guitar has the substantial, resonant feel you’d hope for from one of these.

It’s a substantial instrument too, weighing in at 10lb 7.8oz. That weight suits the feel of the guitar perfectly and adds to that solid, premium late-70s Ibanez character.

Plugged in, the Super 80s are clear, powerful and articulate, with plenty of warmth but still enough definition to keep everything lively.

CONDITION

At 47 years old, this guitar naturally shows its age, and we’ve photographed the notable areas very clearly.

There is visible age-related checking around the neck heel, including the line running across the heel area shown in the photographs. This type of checking is something we have also seen on another 2680 of the same era. The guitar remains solid, plays extremely well and there is no movement that concerns us.

There is also plenty of checking through the aged binding, along with some small chips and areas of finish loss around the body.

The front has a few minor dings and marks, including a couple of small chips around the lower area. There are further small signs of use around the edges and back.

The original gold hardware has naturally tarnished and worn with age, particularly around the bridge, tailpiece and pickup covers. We’ve deliberately left the photographs detailed so the condition can be judged properly.

None of this takes away from what is an extremely attractive vintage example. It looks every bit like a guitar that has lived for nearly five decades, without having been abused.

SPECIFICATION

* 1979 Ibanez Professional 2680

* Bob Weir Signature model

* Made in Japan

* Natural finish

* Ash body

* Set maple neck

* Ebony fingerboard

* 22 frets

* 24¾” scale

* Original Super 80 “Flying Finger” humbuckers

* Original hardware and electronics

* Gold hardware

* German carved body

* Weight: 10lb 7.8oz

* All original

* No case included

A RARE UK FIND

You simply do not see many Ibanez 2680 Bob Weir models physically available in the UK.

There are examples overseas, particularly in Japan and the US, but once international shipping, import VAT and customs costs are added, buying one from abroad quickly becomes considerably more expensive.

At £1,995.00, we think this represents a fantastic opportunity to own an original 1979 example already here in the UK.

And there’s another one coming…

We also have a matching 2680 in Brown Sunburst which is not quite ready for sale yet.

If you’re mad enough, or sensible enough, to want the pair, speak to us.
