Now this is something a bit special.

 

A signature model created for Japanese guitarist Shinichi Ubukata, this 2023 Epiphone ES-355 is a long way removed from a standard production semi-hollow. Finished in Olive Drab, fitted with genuine Gibson ’57 Classic humbuckers, a 6-way Varitone, Bigsby B70 and an ebony fingerboard, it is one seriously distinctive guitar.

 

And then there are those diamond-shaped sound holes. They completely change the look of the guitar and, combined with the Olive Drab finish, black pickguard, multi-ply binding and oversized headstock inlay, make this one of the coolest Epiphone semi-hollows we have had through the shop.

 

Gibson ’57 Classic Pickups

 

A particularly nice feature of this model is the factory-fitted pair of Gibson ’57 Classic humbuckers.

 

These are a major step up from the pickups normally associated with most Epiphone models, delivering the warm, open and articulate PAF-style character they are known for. The neck pickup gives you rich, rounded cleans and creamy drive tones, while the bridge has enough definition and bite to cut through without becoming harsh.

 

Add the 6-position Varitone circuit and there is a huge amount of tonal flexibility available, taking you from full-bodied humbucker sounds through to thinner, more focused and almost single-coil-like textures.

 

Bigsby B70

 

The factory Bigsby B70 vibrato finishes the guitar off perfectly and suits the overall design incredibly well.

 

It gives you subtle pitch movement for chords and lead work while retaining the classic semi-hollow aesthetic that makes this guitar stand out immediately.

 

Construction & Feel

 

The guitar features a mahogany body and neck, with a substantial 50s Rounded C profile.

 

This is definitely not an ultra-thin modern neck. It has a reassuring, chunky feel in the hand that really suits the character of the guitar.

 

The ebony fingerboard gives the guitar a smooth, premium feel while adding definition and snap to the overall response.

Condition

 

This is an excellent, near-mint example overall and has clearly seen very little use.

 

There are some very light surface scratches and handling marks visible when viewed closely under strong lighting, together with some minor tarnishing to the chrome hardware. Nothing remotely excessive and certainly nothing that detracts from the appearance of the guitar.

 

The fitted hard case is also included and shows some normal exterior marks and signs of use.

 

The photographs give a very accurate representation of the condition.

For the specification alone, this represents a lot of guitar for the money. Genuine Gibson ’57 Classics, ebony board, Varitone, Bigsby and one of the most unusual ES-style designs Epiphone have produced.
