2012 Fender Blacktop Telecaster Baritone – Ghost Silver

 

 

A 2012 Fender Blacktop Telecaster Baritone in the fantastic Ghost Silver finish, combining classic Telecaster styling with a full 27” baritone scale, low B-to-B tuning and an unusually versatile HSS pickup configuration.

 

These Blacktop Baritones are a very different proposition from a conventional Tele. The extended 27” scale gives them that deep, powerful low-end response without losing definition, making them equally at home with huge clean sounds, atmospheric playing, heavier styles or simply taking familiar Tele tones into a completely different register.

 

The Ghost Silver metallic finish looks superb against the black three-ply pickguard, rosewood fingerboard and chrome hardware. It’s understated from a distance but really comes alive under the light.

 

Construction is reassuringly familiar Fender territory, with an alder body, maple C-profile neck and rosewood fingerboard. The 9.5” radius and 22 medium-jumbo frets keep it comfortable and modern feeling despite the longer baritone scale.

 

What really sets this model apart is the pickup configuration. Rather than a traditional two-pickup Tele layout, Fender fitted the Blacktop Baritone with three pickups, comprising a Blacktop Tele humbucker at the bridge and Blacktop Tele single coils in the middle and neck positions.

 

Combined with a five-way selector, that gives you a remarkably broad range of sounds, from full, powerful bridge tones through to brighter, more traditional single-coil textures.

 

It is designed for B-to-B tuning, originally using a heavy .013 to .065 string set, and the string-through-body six-saddle hardtail bridge keeps everything solid and stable.

Condition

 

This is a good used example dating from 2012 and shows some genuine signs of having been played.

 

There are several chips and marks to the body, all of which we have tried to photograph clearly, together with light surface scratches and general playwear throughout.

 

There is also some age-related marking and tarnishing to the chrome hardware, along with surface marks to the black pickguard.

 

Importantly, none of this takes away from what is a very striking and unusual Fender, and structurally it presents well.

 

As with any used instrument of this age, there may be smaller cosmetic marks that are difficult to capture in photographs, so please study all of the images carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
