Built in 1989, this stunning Epiphone Les Paul Custom is one of the very first Korean-made Customs and remains one of the most desirable examples from the early Samick production years.

 

Now 37 years old, it has survived remarkably well and is presented in excellent used condition, showing only light scratches and honest signs of play. It has clearly been cherished throughout its life, with no structural repairs, no headstock repairs, and none of the neck binding cracks so often found on early Korean Customs.

 

What makes this guitar truly special is the headstock.

 

For a very short period during 1989, Epiphone produced these guitars with the rare narrow “open-book” headstock, a design heavily inspired by Gibson and only seen on the earliest Korean-built instruments before the familiar clipped Epiphone shape was introduced. It’s one of the defining features collectors and enthusiasts look for today.

 

Like almost every genuine example from this period, the original paper serial number sticker is no longer present. Rather than stamping serial numbers into the wood, Epiphone used adhesive labels which rarely survived more than a few years. Thankfully, this guitar retains every other characteristic of a genuine first-year Korean Les Paul Custom, including the vertical “Gibson” truss rod cover, the rare headstock shape and the correct early construction details.

 

Finished in timeless Gloss Black with multi-ply binding and gold hardware, it still looks every bit the classic Les Paul Custom. The hardware has developed a tasteful natural patina over the years, giving the guitar the sort of character that only genuine age can create.

 

The factory Gotoh tuners remain fitted, and the guitar weighs a comfortable 9lb 3.4oz, giving it all the reassuring feel of a Les Paul Custom without becoming overly heavy.

 

This is far more than just an old Epiphone. It’s an increasingly collectible piece of the brand’s history and one that’s becoming harder to find every year, especially in this condition.

There are light scratches and honest play wear throughout, along with the expected ageing to the gold hardware, all entirely in keeping with a well-cared-for 37-year-old guitar.

 

There are no structural repairs, no headstock repairs, and none of the binding cracks commonly seen on early Korean Les Paul Customs.

 

The frets remain in excellent condition with only minor wear.
