Built in Chicago during Harmony’s golden era, the H53 is one of those guitars that has become something of a cult classic. Lightweight, resonant and fitted with its original DeArmond Golden Tone pickup, it delivers exactly the raw, open vintage voice that players spend thousands trying to recreate.

 

Whether you’re into Chicago blues, early rock ‘n’ roll, jazz, Americana or garage rock, there’s a reason artists continue to seek these out. Plug it into a small valve amp and you’ll immediately understand why.

 

This example remains wonderfully original and is in very good vintage condition for its age. Naturally, after more than sixty years it shows honest cosmetic wear including lacquer checking, scratches, small edge chips and a larger finish chip to the back (all clearly photographed). Around the floating bridge there is the expected finish wear from decades of bridge adjustment, but nothing that detracts from its performance.

 

Most importantly…

 

It simply plays beautifully.

 

The neck is comfortable, the frets still have plenty of life remaining and that original DeArmond pickup produces everything from warm clean jazz tones to gritty, snarling blues with incredible clarity and bite.

 

These don’t come through the shop very often—especially honest, largely original examples like this.
