Alvarez MFA66SHB Masterworks Folk/OM Acoustic – Shadowburst – Hard Case

 

The Alvarez MFA66SHB is a beautifully made all-solid Masterworks Series Folk/OM acoustic, combining an exceptionally high specification with the warm, open character of solid African mahogany.

 

Finished in Alvarez’s striking Shadowburst gloss, the solid mahogany top is framed beautifully by hand-crafted 1.5mm Paua abalone purfling and Acacia binding. The detailing is genuinely lovely on this model, with Paua abalone and mother-of-pearl inlays, a rosewood headstock plate, gold tuners with ebony buttons and an understated 12th-fret fingerboard inlay.

 

At the heart of the MFA66SHB is an all-solid construction, with solid African mahogany used for the top, back and sides. Alvarez developed the Masterworks range specifically to offer the response, projection and tonal development associated with fully solid instruments, and this guitar has a wonderfully open and balanced voice.

 

The Folk/OM body shape is particularly versatile. It offers plenty of depth and projection while remaining comfortable and manageable to play, making it equally well suited to fingerstyle, lighter accompaniment and more powerful strumming.

 

Alvarez’s FS6 forward-shifted bracing system is a major part of the design. The X brace is positioned closer to the soundhole to create a larger active area of soundboard, while the scalloped bracing and tapered tone bars help the top respond more freely. Combined with Alvarez’s bi-level bridge, real bone nut and saddle and carefully selected tonewoods, the result is a guitar with excellent response, balance and clarity.

 

The 630mm scale gives the guitar a slightly softer, more relaxed feel than many full-scale acoustics, while the 44.45mm nut width provides comfortable spacing without feeling overly wide.

 

This particular example has clearly been cherished and remains in very nice overall condition. There are just a few small marks and minor signs of normal play wear, which have been photographed closely. Nothing detracts from what is still a very handsome instrument, and the gloss Shadowburst finish presents beautifully.

 

It plays extremely well and has the rich, mature character you would hope for from an all-solid mahogany acoustic.
