Here’s a lovely example of one of the better DeArmond-era guitars, a DeArmond by Guild M-75 finished in Gloss Black, Korean built and fitted with the highly regarded USA-made DeArmond Gold Tone humbuckers.

These were produced as an accessible take on Guild’s famous M-75 design and have developed a strong following in their own right. The combination of the substantial single-cut body, set-neck construction, full binding and distinctive DeArmond harp tailpiece gives them a character all of their own.

This particular guitar has had just one owner and has seen only very light home use. Remarkably, the protective plastic is still present on the pickup covers, which gives you a good indication of how lightly it has been used.

Condition

Overall this is a really clean example, especially considering its age.

The deep Gloss Black finish still presents beautifully, with just the expected light surface scratches, polishing swirls and handling marks that become visible under direct light on a black guitar. There are no significant knocks or anything that detracts from what is a very smart-looking instrument.

The chrome hardware also presents very well and the fingerboard and frets appear particularly clean.

USA-Made DeArmond Pickups

A huge part of the appeal of these guitars is the pickup set.

This M-75 carries a pair of USA-made DeArmond Gold Tone humbuckers, designed to retain plenty of clarity and definition rather than simply producing a dark, heavily compressed humbucker sound.

They suit the character of the M-75 incredibly well, offering warm and rounded neck tones, a clear and articulate bridge sound and a very usable middle position.

With individual volume and tone controls for each pickup alongside the traditional three-way selector, there is plenty of versatility available.

Classic M-75 Styling

Visually, there is plenty going on here.

The Gloss Black finish is surrounded by contrasting cream binding, while the bound rosewood fingerboard features large pearloid block inlays. The mother-of-pearl-style headstock motif and DeArmond by Guild M-75 branding complete a design that unmistakably draws from Guild’s classic American instruments.

At the other end is that wonderful DeArmond harp-style tailpiece, paired with an adjustable bridge and chrome hardware.

It manages to have some of the visual familiarity of a Les Paul-style single cut while looking very different from the countless copies out there.

The Korean DeArmond range occupies an interesting chapter in Guild history. These weren’t simply generic single-cuts with a familiar name attached. Models such as the M-75 were created around genuine Guild designs and fitted with quality hardware and USA-made pickups.

The M-75 in particular has become increasingly appreciated because it offers something slightly different from the usual Les Paul formula, both visually and tonally.

And finding one that appears to have spent most of its life at home, with the pickup plastics still intact, certainly isn’t an everyday occurrence.
