🔥 Fender Standard Stratocaster HSS 2014 Brown Sunburst + DiMarzio Upgrades 🔥

A very well-specced Mexican Fender Stratocaster here, and one that represents a lot of guitar for the money once you factor in the pickup upgrades.

 

This is a 2014 Fender Standard Stratocaster HSS, made in Mexico and finished in Brown Sunburst with a maple fingerboard.

 

The big story with this one is the electronics. The original Fender pickups have been replaced with a DiMarzio Evolution humbucker in the bridge and two DiMarzio Area 61 stacked single coils in the middle and neck positions.

 

That is a significant upgrade over the stock Mexican Standard pickup set and gives this guitar a much broader range than a standard HSS Strat.

 

The Evolution bridge pickup is powerful and focused, with plenty of output, clarity and bite, while the Area 61s are designed to retain the character and response of vintage-style Strat pickups while reducing the hum normally associated with traditional single coils.

 

The result is a Strat that can cover clean neck and in-between sounds very convincingly, but has a much stronger bridge voice available when required.

 

At £499, we think this offers excellent value considering the cost of the DiMarzio pickup set alone.

 

A Classic Mexican Standard Platform

 

The Mexican Standard Stratocaster has always been one of Fender’s strongest workhorse models.

 

You get the familiar alder body, maple neck, Modern C profile, 9.5” radius and medium-jumbo frets, along with the traditional 25.5” Fender scale length.

 

This example has the maple fingerboard, which suits the Brown Sunburst finish nicely.

 

It currently wears the white pearloid pickguard shown in the photographs, along with white pickup covers and controls.

 

Condition

 

For a guitar that is now around 12 years old, this one presents very well.

 

The finish is still bright, glossy and attractive, particularly across the front and back of the body.

 

There is one small chip to the front of the guitar, shown clearly in our close-up photographs.

 

Beyond that, there is a reasonable amount of normal playwear for its age, including light surface scratches, pick marks and small blemishes. There is also some visible wear and tarnishing to the bridge and hardware from normal use.

 

The back remains very presentable, with no heavy buckle rash or major damage visible.

 

The neck and fingerboard show normal signs of use, and the frets appear to retain plenty of life with no obvious heavy wear visible in the photographs.

 

This is not a mint collector’s Strat, nor are we trying to describe it as one. It is a well-kept, 12-year-old guitar that has been played and enjoyed, but still presents extremely well overall.

DiMarzio Pickup Upgrade

 

This is where the guitar really earns its asking price.

 

Bridge: DiMarzio Evolution

 

The Evolution is one of DiMarzio’s better-known high-output humbuckers, designed for strong attack, clarity and definition.

 

It gives the bridge position substantially more power than the original Fender unit and works particularly well for driven sounds, lead playing and heavier rhythm work.

 

Neck & Middle: DiMarzio Area 61

 

The two Area 61 pickups provide the more traditional Strat side of the guitar.

 

They are stacked single-coil designs created to capture the clarity and sparkle associated with early-’60s Strat pickups while keeping unwanted hum under control.

 

Together with the Evolution, they make this a much more versatile guitar than the original specification would suggest.
