D’Angelico Deluxe Bedford SH Limited Edition Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar + Original Hard Case

A genuinely rare one here, and one of the most interesting D’Angelico models we’ve had through the shop.

This is the D’Angelico Deluxe Bedford SH Limited Edition, a semi-hollow take on the already distinctive Bedford shape, and one that was produced in extremely small numbers.

Only 50 examples were made worldwide, with just 25 allocated to North America, so this is not a model you’re likely to see appear very often at all.

Finished in this superb deep metallic burgundy/red, it has all of the visual details you’d expect from D’Angelico’s Deluxe range. The oversized pearloid pickguard, split block inlays, ornate headstock, stair-step tuners and twin F-holes give it a very distinctive Art Deco look without becoming overdone.

It is certainly one of those guitars that looks better in person than it does in catalogue photos.

The semi-hollow construction also makes this much more than simply a cosmetically different Bedford.

The basswood body has a more open and resonant character than the standard solidbody version, while the set maple/walnut neck and ebony fingerboard give the guitar a really solid, substantial feel in the hands. Upper fret access is excellent thanks to the low-profile neck joint, and the satin-finished neck keeps everything feeling smooth and comfortable.

Where this model really becomes interesting is the pickup configuration.

Rather than the usual twin-humbucker arrangement, D’Angelico fitted the Bedford SH with a pair of Seymour Duncan Five-Two single-coil pickups in the neck and middle positions and a Seymour Duncan Vintage Mini Humbucker at the bridge.

The Five-Two pickups use a mixture of Alnico II and Alnico V magnets and are designed to retain punch and definition on the lower strings while keeping the top end smoother and sweeter.

At the bridge, the Vintage Mini Humbucker gives a completely different voice, with more body, bite and output while still retaining plenty of clarity.

Combined with the 5-way selector, this gives the Bedford SH a surprisingly wide tonal range.

You can move from clean, articulate and almost Tele-like single-coil sounds through to thicker, grittier bridge tones without the guitar ever feeling like it is trying to be too many things at once.

It is a very clever specification and arguably one of the most versatile D’Angelicos from this period.

The hardware is equally well appointed, with Grover locking tuners, tune-o-matic style bridge and stop tailpiece, master volume and tone controls and the usual high-end D’Angelico cosmetic touches throughout.

Condition

This particular example has clearly been cherished and remains in very good overall condition.

There are only a couple of very minor scuffs and small areas of normal playwear, which we have photographed closely rather than trying to hide.

There is also some light age-related tarnishing to parts of the hardware, which is entirely consistent with normal use and storage.

The most noticeable cosmetic mark is the small scuff shown clearly in the photographs. Beyond that, there is nothing we would regard as significant and the guitar presents extremely well overall.

The fretboard is clean, the frets appear to have seen relatively light use and the guitar has clearly been looked after.
