A serious piece of Japanese guitar history, and exactly the sort of instrument our Chordplay Japan Select range is all about.

This is a 1979 Yamaha SG-2000, built in Japan and finished in a beautiful Brown Sunburst. The SG-2000 sits right at the top end of Yamaha’s classic late-70s electric guitar output and has earned a huge reputation for its substantial feel, long sustain, rich tone and exceptional build quality.

There is something unmistakably special about these early Japanese SGs. The carved body, ebony fingerboard, split block inlays, gold hardware and substantial construction give the guitar a luxurious feel, while the twin humbuckers deliver a thick, articulate voice with plenty of definition. It is equally at home with warm clean tones, blues, classic rock and heavier gain.

This example retains its original electrics and also comes complete with its original Yamaha hardshell case.

We suspect the guitar has had fret work carried out at some stage during its life. The frets are currently in good condition and present well, but given the age of the instrument we believe they may have previously been dressed or worked on rather than being entirely untouched.

At approximately 10lb 6.6oz, it has the reassuringly substantial feel these SG-2000s are known for.

Condition

Very good vintage condition, particularly considering this guitar is now approaching 50 years old.

There are various dings, small chips, scratches, surface marks and general signs of use throughout, exactly as you would expect from a genuinely played 1979 instrument. The rear and edges show the majority of the cosmetic wear, with some small marks around the control cavity area and body edges.

The gold hardware also shows age-related wear and tarnishing.

Overall though, this is a remarkably clean and well-presented example for its age and still retains a superb appearance.

As mentioned above, we suspect it has had fret work at some stage in its life. The frets are currently in good condition.
