🇯🇵 1996 ORVILLE LPS-80F FOTO-FLAME, DEEP CHERRY SUNBURST 🇯🇵

A seriously striking piece from the golden era of Japanese guitar production, and one with absolutely bags of character.

 

This is a 1996 Orville LPS-80F, finished in a rich Deep Cherry Sunburst with a particularly dramatic Foto-Flame top. The figuring on this one is superb, with long, bold flame running across the entire body. In person it has that almost “tiger stripe” appearance that really comes alive as the light moves across it.

 

Made in Japan during the highly regarded FujiGen period, the LPS-80F was one of Orville’s more desirable Les Paul Standard models. These guitars have built an excellent reputation for their construction, feel and unmistakably vintage-inspired character, and this one is a great example of why.

 

The construction follows the classic Les Paul recipe, with a mahogany body, carved maple top, mahogany neck and rosewood fingerboard, finished off with traditional trapezoid inlays and cream binding.

 

The highly figured appearance comes from Orville’s Foto-Flame process, a feature now strongly associated with some of the most distinctive Japanese guitars of the 1990s. Nearly thirty years later, it gives these guitars a look all of their own.

 

It appears to retain its original Japanese humbuckers, and this particular guitar sounds fantastic. There is plenty of warmth and openness from the neck pickup, while the bridge has the bite, clarity and sustain you want from a good Les Paul. It has a lively, resonant feel acoustically too and plays extremely well.

 

Weight is approximately 9lb 14.5oz.

 

CONDITION

 

This one has definitely been played and enjoyed, and we think that is part of its appeal.

 

There are numerous signs of use throughout, including chips and knocks around the body edges, wear around the headstock, surface scratches and general play wear. There is also a noticeable chip to the rear of the neck and several areas where the finish has been knocked through around the sides and back.

 

The headstock in particular carries a number of edge chips and marks, while the back shows further scratches and cosmetic wear.

 

The frets show some minor wear but still have plenty of life remaining, and most importantly the guitar plays beautifully.

 

There are no known structural issues or breaks. What you have here is a genuine 1990s Japanese Les Paul that has lived a life rather than spent three decades hidden away in a case. The wear gives it a fantastic vintage character without taking away from how good the guitar looks, feels or sounds.

 

For someone who wants a pristine collector’s piece, this probably is not the one.

 

For someone who wants a fantastic looking, great playing FujiGen-built Orville with loads of personality, this is a very special guitar.
