Now this is a colour you hardly ever see.

 

A 1998 Korean-built Epiphone Les Paul Standard finished in an unusual translucent green / green burst custom colour, and at 28 years old it has picked up exactly the sort of honest age-related character you would expect.

 

The colour is the reason to look twice at this one. Depending on the light it shifts between a rich emerald green and a darker green burst around the edges, with the grain still visible through the finish. We see plenty of late-90s Korean Epiphone Les Pauls, but very few in anything remotely like this.

 

It’s an older Limited Edition / custom-colour example, and that rarity is a big part of the appeal.

 

Condition

 

For a guitar from 1998, it presents well, but it certainly isn’t mint and we’ve photographed the wear closely.

 

There are lines of lacquer checking across the back, most noticeable around the edges and lower rear of the body. These appear to be within the finish rather than structural cracks.

 

There are also:

 

• Various light scratches and surface marks

• Several small white dings/chips around the body and edges

• General play wear consistent with its age

• Scratching and marks to the headstock face

• Some ageing and light tarnishing to the hardware

• Visible fret wear from use

 

The fret wear is noticeable when viewed closely but the guitar remains perfectly playable.

 

As always with an older instrument, we’ve deliberately photographed the marks under strong lighting and at close range so they are easy to see. In normal viewing the guitar presents considerably better than some of those close-ups suggest.

Late-90s Korean Epiphone

 

These older Korean Epiphone Les Pauls have developed a following of their own, particularly the less common finishes and limited-run versions.

 

You get the familiar Les Paul formula of a set neck, bound rosewood fingerboard, trapezoid inlays, twin humbuckers and traditional four-control layout, but with the character that comes from nearly three decades of use.

 

This one also has the older Gibson-branded truss rod cover, cream binding and vintage-style cream tuner buttons, all of which suit the green finish beautifully.
