A cracking USA-made Jazz Bass and a particularly clean example of Fender’s American Special Jazz Bass, finished in classic Black with a maple fingerboard and parchment pickguard.

 

The American Special series was designed to give players a genuine American-made Fender with a slightly more stripped-back, workhorse feel, and these have become increasingly sought after since disappearing from the range.

 

This one has clearly been looked after. It plays beautifully, everything works exactly as it should, and for a bass of this age it presents extremely well.

 

The alder body is paired with a maple neck and maple fingerboard, with Fender’s comfortable Slim “C” profile, 9.5” radius and medium jumbo frets. It feels immediately familiar in the hands, with the narrower Jazz Bass nut width keeping things fast and comfortable.

 

Electronics are classic Jazz Bass territory, with a pair of Vintage-Style Single-Coil Jazz Bass pickups, individual volume controls and Fender’s Greasebucket tone circuit. The Greasebucket system allows the highs to be rolled back without adding the woolly low-end that can sometimes come with a conventional passive tone control, making it a particularly useful setup both live and in the studio.

 

Hardware is kept traditional with a 4-saddle vintage-style bridge and open-gear tuners, while the black finish, maple board and parchment guard give this one a really clean, timeless look.

 

Condition

 

Excellent overall for its age.

 

There are light signs of honest use, most noticeably some surface scratching and polishing in the area where the player’s forearm rests on the body, together with a few small nicks, marks and general signs of play.

 

The close-up photographs were taken under strong direct lighting specifically to show this clearly, and the surface marks appear considerably more pronounced in those photographs than they do under normal viewing conditions.

 

There is nothing major and certainly nothing structural to report.

 

The neck and fingerboard present very nicely, the frets have plenty of life, and the bass plays extremely well. Both pickups and all controls are working exactly as they should.

 

A very well-kept, genuinely playable American Fender rather than a bass that has spent its life hidden away.
