A lovely example of one of Epiphone’s most enduring Les Paul finishes. This 2018 Les Paul Standard Goldtop has clearly been played and enjoyed, but has been very well looked after overall and remains in superb condition for its age.

 

The Goldtop finish still presents beautifully, with plenty of gloss and that classic combination of gold, cream plastics and nickel hardware. There are a few honest signs of use: a small chip to the top edge of the headstock, a handful of light dings and marks around the body, some light scratching to the rear and the expected tarnishing/play wear to the hardware. Nothing detracts heavily from the guitar and, taken as a whole, it is a really attractive example.

 

More importantly, it plays exceptionally well. The SlimTaper C-profile mahogany neck gives it that comfortable, familiar Les Paul feel without being overly bulky, while the 24.75” scale and 22 medium-jumbo frets make it an easy guitar to settle into.

 

At its core is the traditional Les Paul recipe: a mahogany body with a plain maple cap, mahogany neck and a pair of Epiphone ProBucker humbuckers. They deliver everything you would expect from this style of guitar — warm and rounded at the neck, stronger and more articulate at the bridge, with plenty of classic rock bite when pushed.

 

The electronics use the traditional Les Paul layout of two volume controls, two tone controls and a three-way toggle switch, with CTS electronics. Hardware consists of a LockTone ABR/Tune-O-Matic style bridge and stopbar tailpiece, with Grover machine heads completing a very solid specification.

Condition

 

Superb overall for a 2018 guitar. There is a small chip on the top edge of the headstock, along with a few light body dings, surface scratches to the rear and general tarnishing/play wear to the hardware. These are all shown as clearly as possible in the photographs.

 

It remains a very smart-looking Goldtop and, most importantly, is a particularly nice-playing example.
