2021 Dean Exile Select 6 Hardtail – Turquoise Burst Poplar Burl

A rare 2021 Dean Exile Select 6 Hardtail in Turquoise Burst Poplar Burl, and a very clean example of a model that doesn’t come up often.

 

The finish is the first thing that stands out. The burled poplar top has loads of natural figuring and movement, with the turquoise burst framing the lighter centre beautifully. The matching headstock and multi-ply binding finish it off nicely.

 

This is the six-string hardtail version, rather than the Floyd-equipped model, which makes it an especially interesting example of the Exile Select.

 

Condition is near mint overall. There are a few very light play and handling marks if you look closely under direct light, but there is no damage worth mentioning and it presents extremely well.

 

Underneath the burled poplar top is an alder body, paired with a three-piece maple bolt-on neck and bound ebony fingerboard. The neck uses a Slim D profile, with 24 jumbo frets, a 16” radius and 25.5” scale length, giving it the fast, modern feel the Exile was designed around.

 

The pickup setup is a real highlight. It is fitted with a brushed-metal EMG 57TW in the bridge and EMG 66TW in the neck, with push/pull switching to access single-coil sounds as well. It gives the guitar considerably more range than a conventional active humbucker setup, from full high-output tones through to cleaner, more open sounds.

 

The hardtail layout uses a Tune-O-Matic bridge with string-through-body construction, keeping things simple and solid, while Mini Grover tuners take care of tuning.

 

Between the unusual Turquoise Burst Poplar Burl finish, hardtail configuration and EMG TW pickup set, this is a really distinctive Exile and a difficult model to find in this specification.
