Gibson Les Paul Standard ’50s Tobacco Burst 2024 + Original Gibson Hard Case & Candy

 

A beautiful 2024 Gibson Les Paul Standard ’50s in Tobacco Burst, and a lovely example of why this remains one of the core models in the Gibson range.

 

The Standard ’50s takes the modern USA Les Paul back towards the feel and specification of the originals, with a solid mahogany body, figured maple top, no weight relief, a fuller rounded ’50s neck profile and a pair of Burstbucker pickups voiced around the classic PAF sound.

 

This one looks superb in person. The Tobacco Burst finish has a lovely warm amber centre with a darker outer edge, and the figured maple has enough movement to make the top interesting without looking too overdone.

 

It weighs 9lb 2.3oz, which is a good, substantial weight for a non-weight-relieved Les Paul without getting excessive.

 

Condition

 

This guitar has clearly been well looked after and is in cherished overall condition, with only light signs of use.

 

There is one small ding/mark on the front, shown clearly in the photos, along with a few very minor surface marks and light playwear around the body.

 

There is also some very minor buckle rash to the back, again photographed closely. It is light rather than heavy wear and does not detract much at all from the overall presentation of the guitar.

 

The binding, top and back all present very well, with only the sort of minor marks you would expect from careful use.

 

The neck appears to have been lightly sanded or de-glossed, leaving it somewhere between a gloss and satin feel. Visually it remains tidy, but in the hand it feels much smoother and less sticky than a fully glossed Gibson neck, which makes it very comfortable to play.

 

The frets are in very good condition with no obvious heavy wear visible from the photos.

 

The original Gibson hard case is included and remains in good used condition, with the expected light external marks from storage and use.

The Standard ’50s Formula

 

This is the fuller, more traditional side of the current Les Paul Standard range.

 

The body is solid mahogany with a figured maple cap and no weight relief, which gives the guitar the familiar dense, resonant feel associated with older Les Pauls.

 

The neck is mahogany with Gibson’s Vintage ’50s rounded profile, paired with a rosewood fingerboard, 22 frets and acrylic trapezoid inlays.

 

The result is exactly what you would expect from this model: a fuller neck in the hand, plenty of sustain and a very traditional Les Paul feel.

 

Burstbucker 1 & 2 Pickups

 

The guitar is fitted with a Burstbucker 1 in the neck and Burstbucker 2 in the bridge.

 

Both use Alnico II magnets and are voiced around the character of Gibson’s original late-’50s humbuckers, with a warmer neck sound, clear mids and enough bite from the bridge to cut through without becoming harsh.

 

The electronics are hand-wired rather than PCB-mounted and use Orange Drop capacitors, with the traditional Les Paul layout of two volumes, two tones and a three-way toggle.

 

It is a very familiar combination, but there is a reason Gibson keeps coming back to it. This one sounds exactly as you would want a Les Paul Standard to sound.

 

Hardware & Details

 

The ’50s Standard also gets the more traditional hardware package, including the ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge, aluminium stop bar and Vintage Deluxe tuners with Keystone buttons.

 

The nickel hardware, amber top hat knobs with pointers, cream plastics and body binding all suit the Tobacco Burst finish perfectly.

 

It is a very cohesive-looking guitar and one of those finishes that works especially well with the ’50s specification.
