A superb example of the PRS SE Swamp Ash Special, finished in Charcoal with the striking natural grain of the swamp ash body on full display.

 

This one is in genuinely exceptional condition. It is virtually indistinguishable from new, with only the lightest handling marks if you go looking closely. No knocks, chips or damage, and it presents beautifully throughout.

 

It is also a substantial one at 9lb 4.1oz, so definitely at the heavier end for a Swamp Ash Special. In the hands it feels solid and substantial, and it plays superbly.

 

The Swamp Ash Special is one of the more distinctive guitars in the PRS SE range, combining a swamp ash body with a maple neck and maple fingerboard. The grain under the Charcoal finish looks fantastic, while the maple board and PRS bird inlays give it a very different character from the more traditional mahogany and rosewood PRS models.

 

The pickup layout is equally interesting. You get a pair of PRS 85/15 “S” humbuckers in the neck and bridge positions, with a PRS Designed AS-01 single coil in the centre. The AS-01 uses a combination of alnico and steel construction and adds another layer of clarity and bite between the two humbuckers.

 

Controls consist of volume and tone, with a push/pull function on the tone control, together with a 3 way toggle pickup selector. It gives you a broad range of usable sounds without overcomplicating the layout.

 

Playability is exactly what you would expect from PRS. The maple neck uses their Wide Thin profile, with a 25” scale, 22 frets and a 10” fingerboard radius. The PRS patented moulded tremolo feels smooth in use and returns to pitch very well, while PRS designed tuners complete the hardware.
