🔥 Fender Jim Root Telecaster – Ebony Board – EMG 81/60 – Black 🔥

 

This is a slightly unusual one, but in a good way.

 

What we have here is a genuine Fender Jim Root Telecaster built entirely from genuine Jim Root Telecaster components, but with parts from two different production years. We have had the neck off and checked it carefully: the black body dates from 2015, while the ebony fingerboard neck dates from 2021.

 

Our best guess is that a previous owner specifically wanted the look of the earlier black Jim Root Telecaster but preferred the later ebony-board neck, effectively putting together their ideal version of the model. Importantly, this isn’t a standard Tele body with a Jim Root neck fitted to it. Both the body and neck are genuine Fender Jim Root Telecaster parts.

 

And at £699, it is considerably less money than you would normally expect to pay for a Jim Root Telecaster.

 

The Jim Root Telecaster

 

Designed with Slipknot guitarist Jim Root, this is about as far removed from a traditional twangy Telecaster as Fender gets.

 

The familiar Tele outline is still there, but underneath it is a stripped-back, heavy-duty instrument built around a mahogany body, active EMG pickups, hardtail bridge, locking tuners and a very simple control layout.

 

The 2021 neck is particularly nice. It has the ebony fingerboard, 12” radius and 22 jumbo frets, giving it a noticeably flatter and faster feel than a traditional Fender neck. There’s no vintage-style fighting involved here. It feels purpose-built for heavier playing, lower tunings and big bends.

 

The electronics are equally straightforward:

* EMG 60 neck humbucker

* Master volume

* 3-way pickup selector

 

The EMG 81 gives you the tight, aggressive attack these guitars are known for, while the 60 in the neck retains much more clarity than you might expect from an active neck humbucker.

 

It sounds enormous through a driven amp.

 

2015 Body / 2021 Neck

 

We want to be completely transparent about this because it isn’t a factory-matched 2021 guitar.

 

The body is a genuine 2015 Fender Jim Root Telecaster body, while the neck is a genuine 2021 Fender Jim Root Telecaster ebony-board neck.

 

The neck carries serial number MX21503433 and Jim Root’s signature on the rear of the headstock.

 

We have removed the neck and checked the instrument rather than simply assuming what it was from the outside.

 

In practical terms, it gives you a really appealing combination: the stealthy black Jim Root body with the later ebony fingerboard neck.

 

Condition

 

This one has been played and it makes no attempt to hide the fact.

 

The satin/flat black finish naturally shows handling and play wear more readily than a high-gloss finish, and there are various light marks, scratches and signs of use across the body.

 

More importantly, there are several substantial chips/dings around the rear and outer edges of the body. The most noticeable are around the rear strap-button area, where the finish has chipped away exposing the timber beneath. There is also finish damage around the bridge area and further smaller marks elsewhere.

 

We’ve photographed these areas closely rather than trying to disguise them.

 

There is also general wear to the black hardware and the usual surface marking you’d expect on a guitar that has been genuinely used.

 

The neck and ebony fingerboard present much better. The frets look good with plenty of life remaining, and from a playing point of view this is a very nice example.

 

So this isn’t one for somebody chasing a collector-condition Jim Root Telecaster. It is one for somebody who wants the sound, feel and specification of one and isn’t worried about a few battle scars.

 

And that’s reflected heavily in the price.

Our Take

 

This is a lot of guitar for £699.

 

Yes, it has some cosmetic wear and yes, the neck and body left Fender several years apart. But both are genuine Jim Root components, the ebony-board neck is superb, the EMG 81/60 combination sounds exactly as you’d want it to, and the guitar plays extremely well.

 

If you want a Jim Root Telecaster to actually play, particularly one with the desirable ebony fingerboard, this makes a huge amount of sense at the money.
