A Very Special Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul

Every so often, a guitar arrives at Chordplay that deserves a little more attention. This beautiful 2014 Gibson Custom Shop Southern Rock Tribute 1959 Les Paul Standard is one of those guitars.

Based on Gibson’s celebrated 1959 Les Paul Reissue, the Southern Rock Tribute was created to honour the music and musicians who helped establish Southern Rock as one of the defining sounds of the 1970s.

The guitar itself is a wonderful tribute to that history, combining the craftsmanship of Gibson’s Custom Shop with one of the most distinctive finishes we’ve seen on a Les Paul.

Our example is SRT 0061, finished in the exclusive Reverseburst with its subtle inverted heart design, and supplied with its original Gibson Custom Shop case, certificate and accompanying paperwork.

The Reverseburst Finish

The first thing that catches your eye is that extraordinary maple top.

Rather than the traditional sunburst arrangement, the Reverseburst places rich amber and golden tones towards the centre, with beautiful red colouring framing the outer sections. The flame in the maple shifts beautifully under the light, revealing a great deal of depth and movement.

Look carefully and you’ll see the distinctive inverted heart incorporated into the finish, a defining feature of the Southern Rock Tribute.

It’s a design that manages to be unusual without losing the timeless appeal of a late-1950s Les Paul.

The contrasting cream binding, aged nickel hardware, vintage-style controls and original VOS treatment complete the look.

Built Around the Legendary 1959 Les Paul

Underneath that beautiful finish is everything you’d hope to find in a high-end Gibson Custom Shop 1959 Reissue.

The figured maple top sits over a one-piece mahogany body, while the rounded 1959-style mahogany neck and rosewood fingerboard provide that familiar, substantial Les Paul feel.

A pair of Gibson Custombucker pickups offers the vintage-inspired character for which these guitars are so highly regarded. There’s warmth and clarity when played clean, plenty of bite when pushed, and the rich sustain associated with a great Les Paul.

The traditional construction, vintage-style bridge and lightweight stopbar tailpiece all contribute to the instrument’s feel and response.

The action on this example is particularly lovely. It’s a guitar that feels every bit as special in your hands as it looks.

A Tribute to Southern Rock

Gibson’s Southern Rock Tribute programme celebrated the artists whose music became synonymous with the Les Paul, including Dickey Betts, Gary Rossington, Charlie Daniels and Jimmy Hall.

The project was developed with input from figures associated with the genre and vintage guitar specialists, including Ronny Proler.

Alongside its distinctive finish, the guitar features a commemorative Southern Rock Tribute medallion fitted to the rear of the body.

For a collector or enthusiast of the era, it’s a lovely piece of Gibson history, linking the Custom Shop’s recreation of a 1959 Les Paul with the musicians who helped make the original guitars legendary.

Condition – Collector Owned

This particular example has spent its life in the hands of a collector and has seen very little playing time.

It remains in stunning overall condition, with just a few light marks to the top and minor signs of careful handling and play. Nothing of any consequence, and no structural damage.

Naturally, the VOS finish and lightly aged hardware are part of the guitar’s original specification, rather than evidence of heavy use.

The neck, fingerboard and frets present beautifully, and the guitar plays exceptionally well with a lovely low action.

For a 2014 instrument, this is about as nice an example as we could reasonably hope to offer.
