A really attractive anniversary PRS with one of the more versatile switching systems in the SE range.

 

This is the PRS SE 35th Anniversary Custom 24-08, released in 2020 to celebrate 35 years of the Custom 24. It takes the familiar Custom 24 format and adds the more flexible 24-08 switching system, along with the special anniversary appointments that make these models stand out from the standard SE version.

 

Finished in Faded Blue Burst, it has a mahogany body with maple top and flame maple veneer, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard and the distinctive abalone-style PRS bird inlays. It also carries the 35th Anniversary truss rod cover.

 

The main feature is the electronics. It is fitted with a pair of PRS TCI “S” treble and bass humbuckers, controlled by a 3-way pickup selector and two individual mini-toggle switches. Each pickup can be independently switched between humbucking and single-coil operation, giving eight different pickup combinations in total.

 

That makes this a very flexible guitar, with everything from fuller humbucker tones through to brighter, more open single-coil-style sounds.

 

It plays extremely well too. The Wide Thin neck profile feels fast and comfortable, the frets are in good shape and the guitar has the smooth, easy feel that these SE Custom models are known for.

 

Condition

 

This one has unfortunately suffered a drop at some point in its life.

 

There is a repaired area of damage to the lower edge of the body. The repair is solid, but cosmetically it is clearly visible and we have photographed it closely so there are no surprises.

 

It isn’t the neatest cosmetic repair, but it does not affect the structural integrity, playability or performance of the guitar.

 

The position of the damage also helps slightly because, when the guitar is being played in the normal position, your picking arm naturally covers much of the affected area.

 

There is also an area on the top where the finish has gone slightly flat, together with some light surface scratching. In normal room lighting this is not especially obvious, but it becomes more noticeable when viewed under strong direct light.

 

Aside from those points, the guitar presents really well. The Faded Blue Burst finish still looks excellent, the flame veneer has plenty of movement and the rest of the guitar is clean and attractive.

 

The frets remain in good condition and there are no issues with how the guitar plays.

At £599, this is priced to properly reflect the cosmetic damage and gives someone the chance to own a much more interesting anniversary PRS SE for considerably less than a cleaner example.
