A brilliant example of one of the more unusual PRS SE signature guitars, the Paul Allender Signature in Purple Burst.

 

Built in Korea in 2008, this is the original Paul Allender SE associated with the Cradle of Filth guitarist, and it is a model we really don’t see very often now. Between the deep Purple Burst finish, flamed maple veneer, gold hardware and unmistakable bat fretboard inlays, there isn’t much chance of confusing this with a standard SE.

 

This one is also in excellent condition for its age. It has clearly been played and enjoyed, but considering it is now approaching 20 years old it has survived remarkably well.

 

There are light surface scratches and general play marks across the gloss finish, particularly around the picking area, along with some light scratching elsewhere from normal use. The gold hardware has developed some tarnishing and ageing, most noticeably around the tremolo, pickup hardware and tuners. There are also the occasional small mark around the guitar as photographed.

 

Nothing here detracts from what is a really attractive example, and the Purple Burst still looks fantastic under the light.

Paul Allender Signature Model

 

Designed for Paul Allender of Cradle of Filth, this version of the SE takes the familiar PRS double-cut platform in a much heavier direction.

 

The centrepiece is the gorgeous flamed maple veneer beneath the Purple Burst finish, fading into the dark outer edge and complemented by gold hardware.

 

Then there are those inlays.

 

Instead of traditional PRS birds, the rosewood fingerboard carries Paul Allender’s distinctive mother-of-pearl style bat inlays, one of the features that makes these immediately recognisable and increasingly interesting as an older discontinued PRS signature model.

 

Pickups & Coil Tapping

 

A pair of PRS humbuckers provide plenty of output for higher-gain playing, but this guitar isn’t restricted to that.

 

Both controls incorporate push/pull coil taps, allowing the neck and bridge humbuckers to be split independently for a much broader range of sounds.

 

Controls comprise:

 

* Master volume with push/pull coil tap

* Master tone with push/pull coil tap

* 3-way pickup selector

 

That makes it surprisingly versatile, despite its decidedly metal-inspired appearance.
