A cool and increasingly hard-to-find piece of late-70s Japanese guitar history.

Just arrived at Chordplay is this 1978 Yamaha Super Flighter SF500, finished in Vintage White and presented in exceptional condition for a guitar approaching 50 years old. Dating has been confirmed via the headstock serial number and the original pickup baseplate stamps, both pointing to a 1978 production date.

The Super Flighter series was Yamaha’s answer to the growing demand for high-performance solid body guitars in the late 1970s. While many Japanese manufacturers were busy producing copies, Yamaha were quietly building their own identity, combining superb craftsmanship, original designs and excellent hardware. The result is a guitar that feels every bit as well made as you’d expect from a top Japanese instrument of the era.

This example is particularly special as it retains a remarkable amount of its original package. Included is the original Yamaha hard case, original Yamaha owner’s manual and even the original Yamaha strap, items that are very rarely found together nearly five decades later.

Condition is excellent overall and arguably one of the cleanest examples we’ve seen. There is a small touched-in chip to the front edge of the headstock and the typical lacquer checking around the neck joint that is commonly found on guitars of this age. Neither issue affects playability or structural integrity in any way. Beyond that, the guitar has clearly been cherished throughout its life and presents beautifully.

The original Yamaha pickups remain fitted and are date stamped. They deliver everything you’d hope for from a great late-70s Japanese guitar: clear, articulate cleans with plenty of bite and warmth when pushed.

At 9lb 4.4oz this is a substantial instrument with excellent sustain and resonance. The neck is comfortable, the frets have plenty of life remaining and it has been fully checked over and set up here at Chordplay, ready for its next owner.
