A guitar can look MINT, stay in tune and still produce that irritating metallic rattle. So, what causes guitar fret buzz? In simple terms, a vibrating string is catching a fret it should be clearing. The useful answer is more involved: the cause may be your playing, the setup, the strings, the fretwork or the environment the guitar has been sitting in.
A little acoustic noise from an electric guitar, particularly with a low action and a firm attack, is not always a fault. If the buzz cannot be heard through the amp, many players would leave it alone. But buzzing that chokes notes, kills sustain, appears through the amplifier or makes an otherwise brilliant guitar feel difficult to play is worth investigating properly.
What causes guitar fret buzz in the first place?
When you pluck a string, it does not vibrate in a neat straight line. It moves in a wide arc, especially near the middle of its length. For a clean note, that arc needs enough room above the frets ahead of the one you are holding down. If the action is too low, the neck is too straight or back-bowed, a fret sits high, or the string is moving too widely, it can strike another fret and create buzz.
The location of the problem offers the best clue. Buzz on open strings points towards the nut or perhaps a worn string. Buzz around the first few frets commonly relates to neck relief. A single note that dies or rattles badly in one area can indicate a high fret. Buzz all over the board may be a low action, changing humidity, a major neck adjustment issue or several factors at once.
Action that is set too low
Action is the distance between the strings and frets. Lower action generally feels quick and comfortable, particularly for lead playing, but there is always a trade-off. A hard-hitting rhythm player, a heavy-handed bassist and a light-touch fingerstyle player do not need the same setup.
If a bridge saddle has been lowered too far, the strings may not have sufficient clearance across the board. On an acoustic guitar, a very low saddle can create widespread buzz and reduce the break angle over the saddle. On an electric, individual saddles may need raising, while a tune-o-matic style bridge is adjusted from either side.
Do not raise the action blindly, though. It may hide the symptom while leaving a neck or fret issue underneath. A sensible setup balances playability, tuning stability and clean notes for the way you actually play.
Neck relief: too straight can be trouble
Neck relief is the small, intentional forward curve in a neck. It gives the strings a little extra room to vibrate through the lower and middle frets. A neck with too little relief, or a slight back-bow, often produces buzz from the open strings through the lower positions.
The truss rod controls this relationship, but it is not an action adjustment screw. Tiny changes can make a real difference, and the neck should be allowed time to settle between adjustments. For guitars with valuable vintage finishes, delicate old hardware or an uncertain repair history, caution is especially wise. A poorly judged truss rod adjustment can turn a straightforward setup into an expensive workshop job.
Seasonal movement is a common reason a guitar that was perfect in July starts buzzing in January. Central heating can dry timber, while damp weather can have the opposite effect. Solid-top acoustics are particularly responsive to changes in humidity, but any wooden neck can move.
The nut can cause buzz on open strings
If a string buzzes only when played open, then plays clearly once you fret the first note, look at the nut. Its slot may be cut too low, worn wider than the string, or shaped with an incorrect angle. The string should leave the nut cleanly at the fretboard edge rather than sitting loose in a flat-bottomed slot.
Changing to a lighter gauge can expose an oversized nut slot. Conversely, forcing a much heavier string into a tight slot can make tuning sticky and cause other problems. A temporary test may be useful, but packing a nut slot with household materials is not a lasting repair. A properly cut replacement nut or careful slot repair is the tidy answer.
Uneven frets and fret wear
Fretwork has a huge effect on how low a guitar can be set. A single high fret is enough to make a particular note buzz or choke, because the string lands against that fret before it has space to complete its vibration. This is often noticeable during bends, where the note can suddenly disappear as it reaches a raised fret higher up the board.
Frets can become uneven through normal wear, neck movement, impacts or changes in humidity. On older and well-played guitars, frets may develop flat spots beneath the most-used strings. On some instruments, a fret can lift very slightly from its slot. It does not need to be dramatically loose to affect playability.
A skilled technician can identify this with a fret rocker and a straightedge, then decide whether the guitar needs a local fret repair, a level and crown, or a full refret. The right choice depends on how much usable fret height remains. Levelling very worn frets may make them even, but also too low for comfortable bends.
Strings, hardware and things that only sound like fret buzz
Not every rattle comes from frets. A worn or kinked string can buzz unpredictably, and a string that has not seated correctly at the bridge, nut or tuning post can behave oddly. Start with a known-good set of the correct gauge before assuming the guitar needs major work.
Loose machine-head bushes, bridge screws, pickup springs, control knobs, tremolo parts and even a loose jack socket can create a vibration that resembles fret buzz. On acoustics, check for loose hardware, a lifting brace or an object inside the body. A sympathetic rattle may only happen on one note because that frequency excites the loose part.
Listen close to the guitar before plugging in, then listen through an amp at normal volume. If the sound vanishes through the speaker, you may be hearing a harmless amount of mechanical string contact. If it becomes louder or harsher when amplified, the setup deserves closer attention.
Your technique and string gauge matter too
Players often blame the guitar when their picking hand is simply driving the strings harder than the setup allows. That is not a criticism. Stevie Ray Vaughan-style attack, aggressive punk rhythm and percussive acoustic playing demand more clearance than light jazz comping.
Try playing the same passage with a lighter touch. If the buzz largely disappears, a modest action increase may be preferable to chasing an ultra-low setup that fights your natural style. Heavier strings can help some players by feeling more stable under the pick, but they also increase neck tension and may require a setup adjustment. Lighter strings reduce tension yet can move in a wider arc when struck hard.
Capo use can also reveal an issue. If a guitar buzzes with a capo but not without one, the capo may be clamped too tightly or positioned poorly. Place it just behind the fret and use only enough pressure to produce clean notes.
A sensible way to diagnose the buzz
Before reaching for tools, establish a pattern. Play every fret on every string at a normal picking strength. Notice whether the buzz occurs open, in one small area, above the 12th fret, or across most of the neck. Check whether it happens when fretted notes are played softly as well as hard.
Then fit fresh strings if the existing set is tired, damaged or the wrong gauge for the guitar's current setup. Look for obviously loose hardware and make sure the guitar has been allowed to acclimatise if it has arrived from a cold delivery van or been kept near a radiator. These simple checks solve more apparent mysteries than you might expect.
Avoid making several adjustments at once. If you alter the truss rod, saddle height and string gauge together, you will not know which change fixed the issue or caused a new one. Keep the adjustment small, test again and take notes if you are learning to set up your own instruments.
When to bring it to a workshop
A professional setup is the sensible route when the buzz is severe, isolated to certain frets, accompanied by poor intonation, or has appeared after a knock or major weather change. It is also worthwhile when you have bought a used guitar and want it tailored to your strings, tuning and playing style rather than accepting someone else's preferences.
